’Dogs top Catholic to capture 6-3A crown

NEW IBERIA – The District 6-3A basketball championship was on the line when Cecilia tangled with Catholic of New Iberia here last Friday, and the Bulldogs responded to the challenge, handing the Panthers a 46-41 loss to claim the league title.
In capturing the district crown, the Bulldogs, who were league runners-up last year, avenged a 54-57 loss to Catholic earlier in the season. Coach Marty Lewis’ team finished regular season play with a 16-9 overall record and a 7-1 worksheet in district play.
Catholic finished up at 16-14, 6-2 and No. 2 in District 6-3A.
Earlier last week the Bulldogs had raced by North Vermilion, 76-42.
The Bulldogs will mocw into the first round of the state playoffs later this week, but by press time Monday afternoon their opponent was not determined.

St. Martinville ended its season on a sour note Friday, falling to District 5-4A co-champ Abbeville by 67-59 on the road.
The loss left the Tigers with an 18-14, 7-5 worksheet.
Meanwhile, the Breaux Bridge Tigers wrapped up a disappointing season with losses Teurlings Catholic and district co-champ Northside.
The back-to-back losses left The Bridge with a 5-17, 1-11 record for the 2008-09 season.
