After dropping two district games in a row earlier last month, the Cecilia Bulldogs got back on track last week with wins over Teurlings Catholic and parish foe Breaux Bridge.

Meanwhile, St. Martinville fell hard to Northside on Jan. 26 but rebounded with a win over Teurlings Catholic on Friday.

Both parish teams now sport 5-2 District 6-4A records with the Tigers standing at 18-11 overall and the Bulldogs at 17-6.

Breaux Bridge picked up its second league win against Beau Chene on Jan. 26 before Friday’s loss to Cecilia. The Bridge’s record is 9-17 and 2-6.

Cecilia got off to a slow start against Breaux Bridge and the Tigers held a 10-8 lead at the end of the first period. But the Bulldogs outscored The Bridge 19-13 in the second stanza to forge a 27-23 halftime lead. A strong fourth quarter finish helped boost Cecilia to its 10-point victory margin.

The ’Dogs were red hot at the free throw line, sinking 22-of-25 attempts for a big advantage over Breaux Bridge, which connected on only five of its 16 opportunities.

Donovon Williams led three Bulldogs into the double figures with 27 points, while LaDre Roberts and William LeBlanc contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Top scorer for Breaux Bridge was Felton Gregory with 16 while Tommy Celestine added 11 points.

St. Martinville stayed close to Northside through the opening period but the Tigers went cold in the second, scoring only 8 points to the Vikings’ 18 to trail 33-21 at intermission

Cedric George was SM’s only double figure scorer with 11 points.

The Tigers had an easier time of it against Teurlings on Friday, jumping to an 18-9 first quarter lead and never looking back. Trey Anthony burned the nets for 20 points while Lance Charles added 10.

St. Martinville and Cecilia square off again next Tuesday in the second round of the district campaign. The Tigers are hoping the home court advantage will help them avenge an earlier loss to the Bulldogs. The next week’s schedule is as follows:

•Friday, Feb. 5 – St. Martinville at Beau Chene; Cecilia at Marksville; Breaux Bridge hosts Opelousas

•Tuesday, Feb. 9 – Cecilia at St. Martinville; Breaux Bridge at Northside.
