Flood Kits are now available to residents and businesses affected by the recent flood event in St. Martin Parish who have already registered their damages with the St. Martin Parish OHSEP Office.

As we enter the recovery stage of the recent flooding throughout St. Martin Parish, and as residents start returning to their homes and business, parish officials are stressing the vital importance of reporting any and all damages sustained to homes and businesses.

Gov. Jindal announces paving project for the Atchafalaya River Highway

Gov. Bobby Jindal announced Wednesday the state will resurface La. Highway 3177, the Atchafalaya River Highway, from Interstate 10 to the community of Butte La Rose.

Jindal made the announcement at a press conference at the Atchafalaya Basin Welcome Center on I-10 Wednesday afternoon.

LSP still looking into shooting of deputy’s husband

Louisiana State Police are still investigating the Dec. 29 shooting death of 34-year-old Kendall Alexander by his wife, Crystal Alexander, 33, a deputy with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff’s Department.

Meanwhile, the deputy is on administrative leave, according to SMSO Mag, Ginny Higgins.

St. John’s Restaurant moving near to St. Martinville's festival grounds?

St. John’s Restaurant, the popular but cramped eatery in the 200 block of East Bridge St. owned by local cattleman Chip Durand, may spread its wings in 2014.

Durand wants to buy the old Talley Co. pecan warehouse at New Market and Hamilton streets, which is owned by the city.

Sonnier brother dies at Angola

Eddie James Sonnier got sick while burning garbage at Louisiana State Penitentiary and died last month in the prison’s infirmary. He was buried at Angola the day after Christmas with nobody but fellow inmates to see him off.

Man dies in Breaux Bridge area fire

Back-to-back fires on Saturday and Sunday nights had volunteer firemen, from surrounding communities, battling blazes that destroyed two homes and left one person dead.

No holidays at the sugar mill

Workers at the Louisiana Sugarcane Cooperative mill at St. John spent the holidays rushing to wrap up the 2013 grinding season after a mid-December freeze killed much of the cane still in the fields.



RIBBON CUTTING CEREMONIES were held at the first Trailhead on the Bayou Teche Paddle Trail on Thursday, Aug. 18 at Parc du Ponts in downtown Breaux Bridge.
